Successful Spring
I’m pleased to share that the City of Marion has had a highly successful first quarter, with significant progress across various areas, including infrastructure, business growth, and community development. I would like to take a moment to highlight a few key achievements from March:
City Connect
We celebrated the groundbreaking of the new trial project, which will connect the 10th Street trailhead of the Cardinal Greenway to the Washington Street trailhead of the River Walk. The long-term vision is to establish a comprehensive trail system throughout the city, all funneling to the River Walk.
Road Paving/Community Crossing
We were fortunate to receive the Community Crossing Matching Grant (CCMG) from the state once again this year, which enables us to repair and pave $3M worth of roads and sidewalks, further enhancing our community’s infrastructure.
New Businesses
This month, we were thrilled to welcome Starbucks, 7Brew, and Pana Donuts to Marion. These new businesses add to the growing vibrancy of our city, and we have even more businesses from a variety of industries slated to open soon.
Youth Council
The members of the Mayor’s Youth Council were announced, marking the beginning of their journey to influence local policy from a young person’s perspective. Their involvement will undoubtedly contribute to shaping the future of our community.
As we look ahead to Q2, there are many more exciting developments on the horizon, including park developments, new industries, more restaurants, additional blight elimination efforts, and much more. Thank you for your continued support as we work together to make Marion an even better place to live, work, and grow.
Warm regards,
Mayor Morrell
At The White House But Marion Focused
I am honored to have been invited by the President to attend the White House Black History Month Celebration. As Marion's first Black mayor and Indiana's first Black Republican mayor, it was both a privilege and a meaningful experience to participate in the event while contributing to Black history in real-time. Most importantly, my priority was to represent the City of Marion in that esteemed space. It was an unforgettable experience to connect with national leaders, share the exciting developments happening in Marion, and learn from others.
February has been an eventful month. Along with my national travels, I have continued my tour of local businesses. This month, I visited Bahr Brothers, GM, and Advanced Cabinet Systems. I remain impressed by the incredible products being manufactured right here in Marion, from stamped metal at GM, cast metal at Bahr Brothers, to cabinets at ACS. It’s inspiring to witness the global impact of what Marion is producing.
I also had the pleasure of announcing the launch of the Mayor’s Youth Council. This initiative is a top priority for my administration and aims to create a brighter future for the next generation. The council will consist of the brightest young minds in Marion, from grades 6-12. One student from each grade will be selected to serve as a representative, advising me on policies, development ideas, and much more.
Finally, we remain focused on our main initiative: Clean City Marion 2.0. Our goal is to surpass last year's record of 45 demolitions. Currently, we are on track, having completed 10 demolitions to date, which positions us well to achieve 60 this year.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to further growth and working together to promote the message that "Marion Deserves Nice Things."
Best regards,
-Mayor Morrell
Throwing Dirt...
While it's often said that throwing dirt is typically a bad thing to do, the experience of doing so at the River Rock Lofts groundbreaking was truly a privilege. It was an honor to host this momentous event, marking the start of a significant development for our city.
Despite subzero temperatures, over 70 attendees came together to witness the monumental growth happening in our community. This project will serve as a cornerstone in our expanding Riverfront District, which continues to attract investment and transform the area.
We are excited to see what the future holds and invite you to stay tuned for further construction updates this summer. Thank you for your continued support and for helping to bring this vision to life.
Warm regards,
Mayor Morrell
Clear and Attainable Goals
As Mayor, it is natural to feel the urge to address every issue, oversee every project, and attend every meeting. However, I have come to recognize that attempting to do so would not be feasible and would ultimately result in a lack of progress. From the outset of my administration, I have made it a priority to "write the vision and make it plain"—a principle that continues to guide us into the second year of my term.
Our primary objective remains the successful implementation of Clean City Marion 2.0. This initiative is driven by our steadfast commitment to eliminating blight within our community. I am pleased to share that we have already demolished our first structure of 2025, marking a significant milestone.
For 2025, we aim to build on last year's success by increasing our blight elimination efforts from 45 structures demolished in 2024 to 55 structures in 2025. I am deeply grateful for your continued support in this effort, and together, we will work toward making Marion the Clean City you truly deserve. Thank you for your ongoing dedication and partnership.
Sincerely,
Mayor Morrell
Record Breaking Numbers
2024 has been a remarkable year for the City of Marion, marked by significant achievements across multiple areas. From record private sector investments to a notable reduction in crime, we have seen impressive progress. Each department head has submitted an End-of-Year report, and I must say, I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication demonstrated by our team. The commitment to advancing the Clean City 2.0 initiative has been evident across all departments, and the results speak for themselves.
Please find the attached reports for your review. Should you require more detailed information, feel free to visit City Hall and make a request. We would be more than happy to provide further insight.
We are extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished together in 2024, but none of this would have been possible without your ongoing support. As we look ahead to 2025, we are excited about the even greater opportunities and achievements the future holds.
Warm regards,
Mayor Morrell
Downtown Fire Protection
In our first year in office, we are proud to share that we have attracted over $15 million in new investments in our downtown Riverfront District. This includes both new developments and the redevelopment of existing structures. As these investments continue to grow, it is crucial that we ensure the area remains safe and secure, both from a law enforcement and fire protection standpoint.
A key element of supporting the continued growth of downtown is the rebuilding of Fire Station 1. This new, state-of-the-art facility will serve as the city's flagship fire station, encompassing over 8,500 square feet and featuring four bays. We are currently finalizing the design phase and anticipate breaking ground next spring.
Additionally, the city has committed over $2 million to public safety improvements this year, reinforcing our ongoing efforts to strengthen both police and fire services. These investments are essential in safeguarding the major investments we have already secured and ensuring our downtown's continued success.
Thank you for your continued support in these important initiatives. If you have any questions or would like further information, please feel free to reach out.
Warm regards,
- Mayor Morrell
Developing The Talent Pipeline
One of the primary focuses of this administration has been investing in the future of our community's younger generations. Early in my tenure, I shared this vision with Chancellor Huskey at Ivy Tech, and I am thrilled to see the tangible progress we have achieved together.
A key outcome of this collaboration is the establishment of the "Mayor's Scholarship." This initiative provides students from Marion with the opportunity to attend Ivy Tech tuition-free to pursue studies in the trades. In its inaugural year, four recipients were awarded the scholarship, covering their first year of tuition.
Moreover, the scholarship is renewable for the duration of a recipient's time at Ivy Tech, provided they maintain strong academic performance.
We are proud of this investment in education and workforce development and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our community.
Thank you for your continued support in advancing opportunities for our future leaders.
Warm regards,
- Mayor Morrell
Merry and Blight..?
As we officially kick off the holiday season in our city, I want to take a moment to highlight the exceptional efforts of our team in maintaining and improving our community. Even with all the festivities, the dedication to cleaning up the city remains unwavering. To date, we have successfully removed over 35 blighted structures this year—setting a new record based on recent historical data. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our team, and we are determined to sustain this momentum throughout the winter months.
On a more personal note, I’ve had the privilege of engaging in one of my favorite activities as mayor: visiting our elementary schools to read to students. This month, we distributed over 160 books to first graders at various schools, fostering a love of learning and literacy in our youngest residents.
As we approach the final month of the year, let’s continue working hard and remain focused on ending 2024 on a high note. Together, we can head into 2025 with renewed energy and determination to achieve even greater success.
Thank you for your dedication and contributions to our city.
Best regards,
- Mayor Morrell
Looking Back to Move Forward
I wanted to take a moment to reflect on Marion’s longstanding tradition of celebrating the holiday season, particularly Christmas. Marion was once proudly named "Christmas City USA," and our community continues to honor this title each year.
From our River walk, which boasts a stunning light display, to our beloved Christmas Parade, and the contributions of local businesses like Winterland, which manufactures Christmas lights sold across the nation, Marion knows how to celebrate the season in style. This year, we wanted to build upon that magic and make it even bigger and better. We've added more lights and increased participation in the parade, ensuring that this event is a memorable experience for all who attend.
Since taking office, I’ve recognized that while some traditions remain strong, there is always room for improvement and investment. We don’t always need to reinvent the wheel; sometimes, it's about making strategic enhancements. This is why we’ve invested in our parks and renewed the “Clean City Marion” initiative—two examples of how we’re improving what already works.
Let’s continue to celebrate what makes Marion special and invest in its future, building on our proud traditions and making them even stronger.
Warm regards,
- Mayor Morrell
Readers Are Leaders
From the beginning of my campaign and through the first eleven months of this administration, education and the next generation have remained at the forefront of our focus. This commitment is exemplified through initiatives like *Marion Reads* and the establishment of both the *Mayor's Youth Council* and *Mayor's Youth of the Year* program, set to launch later this year.
Additionally, recognizing the importance of literacy as a foundation for future leadership, I have personally purchased books for every first grader in Marion Community Schools. This gesture underscores our dedication to putting books in the hands of our young leaders and demonstrating the significance of literacy in shaping the future of our city.
Thank you for your support in fostering an educated and empowered community.
Warm regards,
- Mayor Morrell
As you prepare to vote for the School Board tomorrow, I encourage you to consider a candidate who shares my vision and commitment to our children’s education: Gabe Delgado. Gabe’s dedication aligns closely with our mission to prioritize education and literacy within our community.
By supporting Gabe Delgado, we can continue to advance these important goals and ensure that our children’s educational needs remain a central focus.
Thank you for your consideration.
Change Happening In Marion
Upon taking office, we inherited approximately $5.9 million in American Recovery Plan Act (ARPA) funds that required allocation before the year’s end to avoid forfeiture. With this mandate in mind, we devised a comprehensive plan to use these funds in ways that would benefit every part of the city.
A wide range of initiatives and organizations received funding through this plan. Notably, $1 million was allocated to the Building Department for blight elimination efforts citywide. Additionally, many smaller projects were approved, and it is exciting to see these initiatives starting to come to fruition.
One such project involves the Garden House stage at Matter Park, a venue that has hosted numerous community events, concerts, receptions, and weddings. Previously, the stage lacked a roof, which limited its functionality. This new addition will not only enhance the types of events we can host but also provide increased entertainment for our citizens and additional revenue opportunities through bookings.
While the larger projects—such as blight elimination, River Rock Development, and public safety improvements—have understandably drawn considerable attention, we are confident that these additional projects will also play a transformative role in shaping the future of Marion.
Best regards,
- Mayor Morrell
New Idea of Family Fun
Saturday mornings in my household used to mean cartoons and cereal for my daughters. However, for the past four months, they have been excited to head to the streets to help with Clean City Marion 2.0. This initiative has grown into more than just a cleanup project—it's become a community-wide, family-oriented effort to foster unity and cleanliness in Marion.
Through this collaborative endeavor, we had six city departments working together and hundreds of citizens participating. I believe this kind of collective effort is what will truly make a difference in turning our city around.
Looking ahead, we're planning to elevate the initiative even further with a total of six clean-up days next year. Let's continue to work together to create the Marion we all want and deserve.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Best regards,
- Mayor Morrell
Let's Get In Shape!
As we conclude the ninth month of my first year in office, I am amazed at how quickly time has passed and how much we have accomplished together. September was a particularly eventful month for Marion, filled with significant milestones that highlight our collective efforts.
Here are some key highlights from September:
**Charles Park Fitness Court Grand Opening:**
We proudly opened the new fitness court at Charles Park, a space designed to encourage our residents to engage in outdoor exercise. This court will play a vital role in promoting health and wellness in our community.
**Mayor’s Scholarship:**
The City of Marion is partnering with Ivy Tech to launch the “Mayor’s Scholarship.” This initiative will provide graduates of Marion High School with the opportunity to attend Ivy Tech and study trades at no cost. More details will be announced soon.
**Next Level Trails:**
We were awarded $548,000 from the Eli Lilly Foundation, through Indiana Wesleyan, to complete our trail project. This is another step forward in promoting health and wellness throughout Marion.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication. Together, we are making great strides in improving our city.
Warm regards,
- Mayor Morrell
One Through Thirty-One
The City of Marion has been fortunate to have had many remarkable mayors throughout its history, each of whom has made significant contributions to shaping the vibrant city we enjoy today. As part of our administration’s vision to honor those who have served in this capacity, we are excited to introduce the "Mayors Wall" project.
I would like to extend a personal invitation to you for the unveiling of this special art piece. The event will provide a wonderful opportunity to learn about the history of our city and to meet several of our former mayors, five (including myself) of whom are still with us today.
Please join us tomorrow, Tuesday, October 1st, at 11:30 a.m. at City Hall for this historic occasion. Light refreshments will be served following the unveiling.
We hope to see you there!
Best regards,
- Mayor Morrell
When It Is Over.
I am pleased to announce that the City of Marion has been honored this year with the maximum Community Cross Grant from the State of Indiana. For the first time in Marion’s history, we pursued and secured the full matching grant of $1.5 million, which will allow us to complete $3 million worth of road improvements throughout the city. The work has official began, as on September 18th.
As with any large-scale infrastructure project, this significant endeavor will bring some temporary inconveniences due to construction. I fully understand how disruptive these can be to daily life; I share in that frustration. However, we must recognize that these temporary challenges are necessary steps toward a better future for Marion. I often refer to this period of inconvenience as "The Price of Progress." It represents the growing pains we must endure together to achieve the Marion we all want and deserve.
Thank you for your continued support and patience as we work through this transitional time. I am confident that the improvements ahead will be well worth the temporary discomfort.
Sincerely,
- Mayor Morrell
The PEOPLE
As mayor, I face many challenging decisions, from personnel changes and infrastructure projects to managing the city’s budget. However, the most rewarding part of my role is interacting with the citizens of Marion. Whenever I find myself caught up in the daily responsibilities, I am always energized by the opportunity to connect with our community.
Two of my favorite occasions for this are the Traveling Town Halls and the City-Wide Clean Ups. If you haven't attended either yet, I encourage you to join us. It's a wonderful opportunity not just to meet with me, but to witness firsthand how deeply so many of us care about our city.
We truly are a remarkable community, and when we come together, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.
I hope to see you there!
Warm regards,
- Mayor Morrell
Collecting Trash and Cash
The City of Marion has had an incredibly eventful few weeks, with numerous community events, festivals, and activities taking place. I had the privilege of attending each one, and while I’m certainly feeling the energy it took, I am overwhelmed with joy by the remarkable sense of unity we are experiencing as a city.
A few highlights:
- We successfully hosted our 3rd City-Wide Clean-Up Day. Despite it being a holiday weekend, over 180 volunteers showed up to help keep our city beautiful.
- We are honored to have received a generous grant of $548,598 from The Lilly Foundation, in partnership with Indiana Wesleyan University. This grant will allow us to complete the Next Level Trails project, which began in 2019. Our administration is committed to making Marion a walkable city by connecting our trails to the Riverwalk, and this funding marks an important step toward achieving that goal.
As we enter the "fourth quarter" of my first year in office, I want to express my sincere gratitude for the support you've provided. Reflecting on the first three quarters, we’ve accomplished a great deal, and none of it would have been possible without your partnership.
Thank you again for your continued support.
Warm regards,
- Mayor Morrell
Let's EAT!
I am excited to share that this weekend, the City of Marion is partnering with our local food trucks to host "The Taste of Grant County." This event promises to be a delightful experience filled with delicious food, fun activities, and a great atmosphere for families and friends.
I hope you can join us to enjoy everything that Marion has to offer. We look forward to seeing you there!
Best regards,
- Mayor Morrell
Nothin' Wrong With Singles
As leaders, particularly in the political arena, it's easy to get caught up in the pursuit of "home runs"—those big headlines, social media attention, and public accolades. However, what truly impacts our citizens are the consistent, day-to-day "single base hits."
For years, Marion has focused on chasing home runs, often overlooking the small, yet essential, actions that keep our city thriving. The danger in this approach is that, when the big win doesn't materialize, we find ourselves with a team that hasn't made steady progress. While I am excited about ambitious projects like the River Rocks Lofts, our administration is committed to making steady, daily improvements. This is why you’ve seen a focus on repaving alleys, updating street signs, organizing city-wide cleanup days, and developing a new app. Most recently, I've instructed our traffic team to repair every broken, or "blinking" stoplight as part of this effort.
Our mantra, "Marion Deserves Nice Things," reminds us not to overlook the small tasks that keep our city running smoothly. While the larger projects like new companies, job creation, and multimillion-dollar investments capture attention, it’s the small, consistent actions that prove we’re ready to support and maintain those investments.
I need your continued support on this journey of "hitting singles" every day, so that when the opportunity for a grand slam arises, Marion is prepared to seize it.
Thank you for your commitment to our shared vision.
Best regards,
- Mayor Morrell
Breaking Ground and Generational Divestment
Every city has an area that seems to be overlooked—where investment is scarce, and attention from city officials seems minimal. In Marion, this has traditionally been the southeast side. Having spent the majority of my life in this area, I have witnessed the rest of Marion receive new developments and improvements, while this part of the city was often ignored. This is why it was such a pleasant surprise when I was approached by Hands of Hope to collaborate on a new project in this very area. I knew that the development of a new park here would mean much more than just the park itself; it would represent a restoration of hope for all of Marion.
Through the combined efforts of Hands of Hope, Councilman Whitton, and the City of Marion, we were able to secure an investment of over $100,000 into this area, which has been neglected for decades. This project stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when municipalities and local organizations join forces for the betterment of the community.
Please be assured that this administration is committed to investing in the entire city, ensuring that every citizen enjoys the quality of life we all deserve. However, we cannot achieve this without your continued support.
Thank you for your dedication to our shared vision.
Best regards,
- Mayor Morrell
